Little Water Cay Opens New Visitor Center

The Turks and Caicos National Trust unveiled the newly built visitor center on Little Water Cay to the public showing their continued support to protect and maintain the natural environment and heritage of the islands.

The ribbon cutting ceremony held Tuesday, Feb. 26, was preceded by a presentation highlighting the efforts of the Turks and Caicos National Trust and their supporters and sponsors. Ethlyn Gibbs-Williams, executive director of the TCNT, spoke of the project and their continued efforts, combined with the Tourist Board and the Department of Maritime Affairs, to further preserve the island from erosion.

“It is a very special habitat and it is one of the jewels of the Turks and Caicos which needs to be polished…so that it can really, really shine and deliver all of its potential,” said Gibbs-Williams. With the completion of the visitor center the TCNT now looks to tackle other items such as the wooden walkways and the constant erosion eating away at the outskirts of the cay.

The visitor center is a small, sturdy building constructed by T. Holdings LTD. In it, visitors will find postings about the iguanas and other wildlife on the cay and have a view through any of the numerous windows to areas off the wooden path. The building is spacious enough for the small tours that frequent the cay and continued maintenance and improvements will see that the center continues to stand as an educational starting point for future visitors.
