Father-Daughter Victory in National Sailing Championship

The champion titles from the first National Pico Championship went to Adam Twigg for the adult class and his daughter Phoebe Twigg for the junior class after an exciting weekend of strong winds and testy waters. The sailing championship, sponsored by the Turks and Caicos Sailing Association, was hosted at the children’s park by the Provo Sailing Club during the first weekend of December.

It saw two classes of competition, adults and juniors, which each brought in numerous competitors.  Adam Twigg dominated the adult class with consistent victories through the eight race series, while his daughter, Phoebe, took home the title for the junior class.

“These races represent years of effort by the TCI Sailing Association and the Provo Sailing Club to encourage sailing amongst our youth,” said Dave Douglas, president of the Provo Sailing Club. “Countless hours have been spent by our volunteers instructing and coaching sailing and racing to children from all of the schools on Providenciales.”

The junior class, which placed an age limit of 18 years and younger, ran their 12 races over two days. The first series saw Leial Missick pull out a victory, but Phoebe Twigg ultimately won top honors in the division after battling back from behind during the second series.

In the adult division, while Adam Twigg was the clear champion overall, second through fourth place were tightly contested with only two points separating the place finishers. Martee Doverspike took second place honors while Simon Wood was able to grab third place.

Race Director Joe LeMoine of the Provo Sailing club was excited about the turnout for the event. “The Provo Sailing Club has been hosting the Fool’s Regatta for years, and now a second major sailing event has been established on the islands.”
